The Suzuki Method

Dr. Shinichi Suzuki, a violin teacher in Japan, created the Suzuki Method of teaching (Talent Education) believing that every child's potential and ability could be highly developed with the proper training and learning environment.  He created ten volumes of compiled music repertoire for private teachers to use to chronologically teach music concepts to their students.

Suzuki created the concept of the Mother Tongue approach to teaching music - teaching a child music in the way you would teach a child to speak.  Similar to language where we do not require a child to learn to read before learning to speak, Suzuki lessons delay note reading until the instrument techniques have been set up well, and prioritizes memorization and review.  Listening daily to a reference CD in order to hear and imitate good tone is also a crucial part of the method.  Distinctives of the Suzuki Method include starting students at a young age, emphasizing auditory learning, using a defined repertoire, and encouraging parental involvement.
